As a third- and fourth-level care hospital, E.S.E. Hospital Universitario Julio Méndez Barreneche serves patients from both the subsidized and contributory healthcare systems. In addition, the hospital provides specialized care to the population of the entire Department of Magdalena and surrounding regions, due to the limited resources and capacities of other healthcare institutions in the area.
The hospital is recognized as a regional leader in neonatal care, particularly in the treatment of premature and low-birth-weight infants from vulnerable and low-income families. As such, it faces the ongoing need to strengthen its technological and clinical problem-solving capacity in the management of critically ill newborns, especially those born prematurely, with low birth weight, or with complications during delivery.
Currently, the demand for care in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) exceeds the availability of specialized equipment. For this reason, the acquisition of a neonatal incubator with an integrated scale represents a highly valuable addition to the unit. This equipment will optimize patient care, reduce the risks associated with handling newborns during weighing procedures, and ensure more accurate monitoring of their growth and clinical progress.
Likewise, it is important to highlight that the charity donated another incubator to the hospital ten years ago, which continues to be actively used by the NICU team, demonstrating the lasting impact and value of this type of contribution to newborn care.
